Tough Friends is at least somewhat interesting until it gets to its usual Chevrolet shill. This one deals with iron, how its made into steel, and how different types of steel is made. Didnt know, for example that Alloy is the combination of different steels mixed together. (Oh admit it, you didnt either). This film also features a difficult try it at home experiment. (If you have some smelter lying around that is). Of course, this all leads up to cars. What did you think?

Few of us consider what materials go into our automobiles and many other products we rely upon in our modern lives.
This instructional short describes how alloy steels are made, from iron ore to a variety of specialty steels with unique characteristics needed for automobile construction.
The "Tough Friends" are the various alloying elements that when added to steel give it special properties: chromium for hardness, chromium and nickel for tensile strength, silicon and chromium for heat resistance, nickel and molybdenum for fatigue resistance, manganese and silicon for elasticity.
The only error I noticed is the confusion of carburizing with case hardening. These are separate processes, and a carburized part must be heat treated before it is hardened and tempered for use.
Although this is a Chevy sponsored film, there is little in the way of marketing, and the examples of various automotive applications of steel alloys are generic and could be applied to any car of the era.
A well made and instructive film. I just wish the narrator would drop the emphasis on the last syllable of "alloy".
